Abortion is a controversial topic. Some think it is one's choice and others think it is qualified as death and cannot be done by human hands. Thirteen-year-old Mallory Pickens was at the "March for Life" event fighting against abortion. What she did not know was that she was actually pregnant herself. Yes, thirteen years old, in the eighth grade, and pregnant! The night before she was with her church's anti-abortion organization and apparently she had spent some quality time with one of the members who is also thirteen. Unaware that the thirteen-year-old boy's sperm had won over one of her eggs, she marched on and had her anti-abortion thoughts passed through to the audience. Sources predicted that Ms. Pickens, being fully pro-life, will drop out of school, exclude herself from friends and family, and will suffer depression. Although abortion is wrong, only the parents of the fetus truly feel the situations they might be put through with a child, and all that can be changed in their own lives. For a girl who fought so hard against abortion, what decision might she make now that the issue of keeping and raising a child is in her hands?
The fact that she was pregnant and walking against abortion is pretty ironic. Little does she know that she might be making a decision that would go against what she believed in. It is harder for her to actually make a decision instead of just talking against abortion. The decision she makes would be very interesting for me.
ReplyDeleteThis is HUGELY ironic because of the situation. Even though I am pro life, there are certain situations in which one should be able to qualify for an abortion from the government. In this case, I say that she should keep the child because it was her mistake that she did things a normal thirteen year old girl is not supposed to do, and now she faces the consequences. The family should embrace their pro life beliefs, and have that baby born, because a baby should not be aborted because of self comfort for the person. The only way I would accept abortion is if the person has been raped or it is going to affect the mother's health. All other cases are completely unacceptable, ESPECIALLY this one.
ReplyDeleteIt is totally fine to acquire an abortion in this case because she is only thirteen years old, which is not the proper age to raise a child. This little girl is a child herself, how is she planning on taking care of another child, especially considering how much responsibility and organization that requires? I do not consider abortion a sad step because the pregnant woman has not seen or made a connection with her child. Therefore, she shall not suffer from its loss. The fact that this girl will drop out of school, exclude herself, and suffer depression is just tragic. She cannot survive on her own because she is not fully capable of making decisions of her own. Her parents should decide for her to have abortion, so she will not suffer later on. She still has an entire lifetime ahead of her to enjoy. Hopefully she herself considers all the future issues and makes a smart decision to make her life easier.
ReplyDeleteI cannot stop but think about how much situational irony there is in what thirteen year old Mallory had done. FIrst of all, I believe that if one is educated enough to attend an anti-abortion walkathon, they would know a thing or two about having sex and what it does to the human body, especially the female. Being a church girl, who would have guessed Mallory would have been one to get impregnated by a boy about her age. I think the media is giving too much credit to Mallory in the sense that they are praising her for keeping the fetus when in essence she really had no choice due to the fact that she publicly sold herself as one against abortion by attending the walkathon. Now she must live the rest of her life with the burden of her guilt, and her future child will serve as a constant reminder of her absent mindedness as a young teenager who decided it was time she got pregnant.
ReplyDeleteAs everyone has stated above, this story has an extreme case of situational irony. I have the strongest feeling that thirteen year old Mallory will end up aborting her unborn child. Have sex with a thirteen year old, as a thirteen year old, then proceed to march against abortion, "you go girl". I, being a strong believer of anti-abortion, think what she has done is wrong. It is her responsibility to wait until marriage before becoming sexually active. If Mallory cannot control her lust, maybe her parents should buy her a chastity lock. I am completely disappointed in Mallory, and if she ends deciding to receive an abortion, I hope the Supreme Court decision concerning abortion is overturned, forcing Mallory to become a mother. But wait, there is more. Mallory will probably rake in the dough by becoming a new mother on MTV's "Teen Mom".
ReplyDeleteThis is a great article that creates a highly ironic situation for Mallory Pickens. It presents the hypocritical and judgmental, however at the same time careless type of society we live in nowadays. I say hypocritical and judgmental because the decision of whether a mother would like to abort her child or not is solely up to her and the baby's father. Absolutely no one else should have a say in it other than possibly the mother and father's parents, nor should they be allowed to criticize any one else for their decisions because they just as well may find themselves in the same position as Mallory. And I say careless because so often we hear that a young teenager has become pregnant. If someone wants to have sex at such a young age they should take the appropriate precautions, and if not just remain abstinent, that is the best decision.
ReplyDeleteEveryone has their own opinion on abortion. Either they are against it or for it, but what happens when they are put in the position where they have to choose? Abortion should be legal because everyone has their own reason and situation for why they do not want the baby they produced. Mallory Pickens, who is too young to have a baby right now, should have been responsible and taken precaution before engaging in sexual intercourse. She is only a teenager and can hardly look after herself, let alone a newborn baby. For that reason, I believe abortion would be appropriate for her situation, even if it would be hypocritical for her to do.
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost, I would like to address the fact that our society is truly corrupt and it feels as if it is beyond repair. How can thirteen year-old children even think of sex? I cannot fathom the mentality of a young individual who accepts actions such as this. Second, I feel that Mallory Pickens must have her child if she protested with such conviction. If she has an abortion, then people will see her as nothing more than a hypocrite. I believe abortion should be banned, because it is unjust and cruel to kill a baby before he or she has a chance at living. The only exception for abortion should be situations involving rape. Individuals would act much more cautiously if each person knew that the rash and impulsive actions have inevitable consequences. Abortion provides a scapegoat for people who refuse to take responsibility for their mistakes, and I would consider Mallory Pickens as one of those people if she decides to have an abortion, despite her incredibly young age.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the dumbest things that I have heard about. This girl who acts upon her gods name and, seemingly devotes her time to preach about the sin of abortion, goes around at the age of thirteen and becomes pregnant. Excuse me for not caring about this girl because she is the perfect example of a hypocrite. She believes it is wrong that some women choose that they are not ready to have a child while she also believes it is appropriate for an eighth grader to have sex. It is extremely ironic and I hope she gets a taste of her own medicine for judging all of those women who probably lost many months of sleep because of that one decision they made to not have their child.
